SOUTH KOREA: Snow Candy - Starship Planet
This collaboration between K-pop artists K.Will, Sistar and Boyfriend comes from a country which is the first we are to review that is not a Christian country, and thus this Christmas song is continuing in the tradition pioneered in the West where Christmas is used in a non-religious way and as a theme to cash in and sell their music, not just to the Christian section of South Korean society but also to the global audience obsessed with the K-pop genre. In keeping with much of K-pop as a genre, the record label Starship Entertainment united a variety of artists in order to keep up with the latest trends within the market and naturally the Christmas market would become a lucrative market to tap into. Even the name Snow Candy implies that they have not put a great deal of thought into the creation of pertinent lyrics, but rather they have just selected two overtly Christmassy words and bunged them together. That said, for manufactured commercial pop it is pretty fun and certainly works as a toe-tapper even to the uninitiated K-pop fan.
